There is no darkness without light, and no light without darkness. And darkness can illuminate.
This series started out using strong light to define people, but it soon became about people showcasing light. Then about heat. Faces are secondary; I’m interested in how the environment affects what we do and wear.
Heat (and heatwaves) drive behaviour. In the high-contrast canyons of the city, people dash between patches of brutal light and heat – they squint and shade their eyes. Out come the sunglasses, hats, bright clothing, cold drinks. Shadow is no longer the absence of light; it becomes a place of relief.
